XMU professor named a top translational researcher
廈大教授入選全球前20位轉化研究者
The scientific journal Nature Biotechnology recently announced its annual list of Top 20 translational researchers， including on its ranking Xiamen University‘s Xia Ningshao （pictured middle）。 The only scholar from Chinese mainland to make the list， Mr。 Xia ranked 18th。 A pair of scholars from the Chinese University of Hong Kong also made the list。
Initiated in 2013， the journal’s list is based on criteria including the total number of patents granted to each scholar in Europe and the U。S。 in the previous year， the number of top-cited patents over the previous five-year period and each researcher‘s H-index （a measurement of impact for published work over time）。
This is the second time for Mr。 Xia to appear on the list since 2016。 The 57-year-old researcher studied in China and is the director of the National Institute of Diagnostics and Vaccine Development in Infectious Diseases， which is based at Xiamen University。 He presided over the development of the world’s first hepatitis type-E vaccine and the development of the first domestic HPV vaccine to earn prequalification from the World Health Organization。 During his tenure， the institute also created the world‘s first HIV urine antibody self-test reagent and the world’s first covid-19 total antibody test reagent。
11 local tunnels equipped with LED lighting

Local transportation authorities last week announced that all 11 vehicle tunnels servicing Xiamen are now equipped with LED lighting。 The new lighting system is expected to save 14 million kilowatt hours annually， equivalent to a reduction in 5，600 tons of standard coal and 14，000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions。
Foreign trade soars in first ten months of 2021
1-10月我市外貿進出口強勁增長
Xiamen‘s foreign trade volume amounted to 732。3 billion yuan from January through October， up by 28。8 percent year-over-year。 Combined import and export values hit 131。5 billion yuan for trade with ASEAN countries， 94。4 billion yuan for trade with the U。S。 and 78。9 billion for trade with European Union countries。
Xiamen Port handles 10M+ TEU in first 10 months of year

Representatives of the Xiamen Container Terminal Group announced recently that Songyu Wharf’s container throughput exceeded 6，546 TEU［through October］。
Additionally， a new route debuted between Haitian Wharf and a host of Asian countries including Malaysia， Singapore and Thailand。 The new route is expected to include throughput of circa 1，000 TEU per week。
Xiamen‘s port debuted a total of 15 new international container liner routes this year， part of its goal of achieving an annual container throughput target of 12 million TEU。
Work progresses on subway Line Six

Local officials recently announced the new progress of Line Six。
The section of Line Six that runs between Jimei and Tongan includes the Houwu and Xihu Cun stations。 The rail section runs diagonally between West Binhai avenue in the east and the Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railway in the north。
The 1。5-kilometer section of rail includes underground tunnels。 Line Six will be the city’s first subway line to reach Tongan。 Line Six is slated for completion in advance of the debut of the Fuzhou-Xiamen high-speed railway。
XM launches reporting system for offshore dumping and sand mining

City officials recently announced the debut of China‘s first coastal police reporting system for offshore dumping and sand mining。 Official representatives said that the app-based system is designed to aid in the supervision and management of offshore dumping and sea sand transport projects。
Digital apps can be used to query the status of marine projects， file new projects， explore project statistics， and distribute project alerts。 Ship crews can use the digital system to report data such as ship operation time， location status and operation volume。
Trial voyage complete for new XM-built ferry vessel

The Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Company （XSI） recently announced the successful trial voyage of a new passenger roll-on / roll-off ferry vessel built for Viking Line。 The ship is the first of its kind to be built by XSI。
The 226-meter ro-ro ship can accommodate 2，800 passengers and 200 crewmembers。 The vessel is powered by a dual-fuel main engine and electric propulsion system with two pod thrusters capable of moving the ship at up to 22 knots。
XM establishes literature and art development fund

Vice minister Ouyang Lijuan of the Publicity Department of the city’s Municipal Party Committee recently announced a new fund dedicated to the development of literature and the arts。 The fund will be formally implemented by the end of this year or early next year。 Future grant applicants will be able submit information and project-related materials online。
The Xiamen-based fund is the joint development of the Publicity Department of the Municipal Party Committee， the Municipal Finance Bureau， the city‘s Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Xiamen Federation of Literary and Art Circles。
Hundreds of firms net 100M yuan during 11/11 shopping event

Online retail platform Tmall announced that 382 companies netted more than 100 million yuan apiece during the recent November 11 shopping period。 Top-earning companies includes Apple， Huawei and L’Oreal。 Locally-based firms that hit the 100-million-yuan threshold included Anta， Erke and Yan Ziwu。
Tmall‘s figures included revenue generated between November 1 and November 11。 Companies with high growth volume’s for the shopping period included Erke， with first-hour sales for the company growing 27-fold over the prior year。
XM‘s growth rate for takeout coffee is Fujian’s highest

A recent Meituan survey indicated the number of Xiamen coffee shops is up by 41 percent year-on-year， with orders soaring by more than 400 percent， the highest growth rate in Fujian。 Xiamen‘s takeaway coffee experienced the highest growth in Haicang， trailed by Tongan and Jimei。
Express vehicle lanes proposed between Huli and Tongan

The Xiamen Public Resources Trading Center recently issued a bidding announcement for a proposed dedicated roadway between Huli and Tongan。 The 9。2-kilometer project is slated to run between Huli’s Airport North road and Tongan‘s intersection of Meishan and Meishe roads。 The route would pass through the current airport tunnel and would flank Tongan’s Meifeng park before proceeding along Binhai West avenue to the Meishan and Meishe intersection。
XM debuts visible laser beams for pedestrian crossings

Local traffic authorities last week announced the debut of visible laser beams to illuminate pedestrian crosswalks for oncoming traffic。 The light beam system debuted in Jimei at an intersection along North Sunban road in the Rendeli neighborhood and at an intersection along Jiyuan road near the local ICBC branch。
The laser beams are located no more than 40 centimeters from the ground in an effort to mitigate their impact on nearby businesses and residents。 Officials noted that the light beams will improve crosswalk visibility at night and in the event that traffic lights are disabled by severe weather。
