Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) was first published over a century ago but remains a children’s classic。 The story was written by Lewis Carroll and illustrated by John Tenniel。 The novel is about a young girl called Alice who follows a White Rabbit down a rabbit hole and into ‘wonderland’。 Wonderland is a magical, nonsensical and strange land, where Alice meets plenty of interesting and memorable characters。

The Story

Alice is reading with her sister on a hot summer day。 She sees a White Rabbit run past her。 It is wearing a waist coat, looking at its pocket watch and exclaiming how late it will be。 Alice cannot remember seeing a rabbit like thisbefore, so she follows it down the rabbit hole。

This leads her to a hall lined with doors。 She finds a key on a table。 The key opens a very small door, which leads to a lovely garden。 Alice longs to enter but is too big。 She puts the key back on the table and sees a bottle labelled ‘DRINK ME’ She decides it is not poison and drinks it。 She shrinks until she is small enough to go through the door。 However, she has forgotten the key on the table。 She sees a cake labelled ‘EAT ME’ and does so。 This causes her to grow so tall she can no longer see her feet。

The shrinking and growing are so disconcerting that Alice starts to cry。 Then, she uses a fan to cool herself down。 She realizes the fan is shrinking her and she is in a pool of tears – the tears she cried when she was tall。 She is swept away by the tears, along with lots of other odd creatures, and whisked into Wonderland’s strange world。

Alice journeys on to have adventures of a never-ending tea party, nonsensical conversations with a Cheshire cat and meeting the Red Queen – who is worryingly quick to execute anybody in her way。

Alice was my favourite character in the book。 Her curiosity and intelligence brought her adventure and leads her to Wonderland。 She is determined and self-assured in the face of a changed world – something Iam sure can help young readers today。

I also liked the Cheshire cat because he was aloof and deigned when he would give Alice his company – like most cats do!

This Edition

I love this edition as it has such beautiful details, like its blue edges。 Inside, there are illustrations which accompany the story。 This includes a laminated coloured section in the middle of the story, which details the important events of the book。 The only problem with this is it gives away the ending during the middle of the story。 You could always return to this section at the end and enjoy the colourful illustrations with no spoilers。

When I was younger, I found the tale of Alice in Wonderland slightly scary at times in its nonsensical nature。 I did, however, enjoy the strange characters and watched the Disney film multiple times。 As an adult, I wish I had read the book when I was younger。 It is full of strange, anthropomorphic creatures who can speak to Alice。 Alice’s own thoughts on the strange experiences she has greatly amused me。 For example, when she grows from eating the cake, she assumes she is also becoming wiser – as this supposedly happens when you grow up!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to both adults and children。 This story is about how the impossible is perhaps just a doorway away。

“For, you see, so many out-of-the-way things had happened lately that Alice had begun to think very few things indeed were impossible。”

It breaks all the rules of what a book looks like – we enter the same strange world Alice does。 This book is perfect for 7-8-year olds looking for an imaginative adventure to read。
