在遇到不定冠詞 a 之前，bit 常用作名詞，但是當它遇到 a 之後，a bit 具備了其他的功能了。此時它相當於一個程度副詞，通常用來修飾形容詞，相當於 a little，也可以修飾動詞，意為“有點，稍微”，例如：
They had got a bit tired working in the garden。
他們在花園裡幹活有點累了。
Can you wait a bit for us？ We’re in heavy traffic。

那麼 a bit much 到底是一個什麼樣的存在呢？按照 a bit 修飾的原則，這裡的 much 是一個形容詞；其實 a bit much 是 a bit too much 的縮寫，其中的 a bit 是修飾 too 的，而 too 修飾 much 的，就是我們常見的 too much，那麼 a bit too much 的意思就是“有點太過分了“，常用作表語，例如：

但是與 too much 不同的是，此時的 a bit much 不修飾名詞，因此我們不能說 there is a bit much water left，因為不但意思行不通，而且 much 修飾不可數名詞時常用的修飾語是 so 或 too，而不用 a bit，否則 a bit much 所表示的數量模稜兩可，或者說這種表達方式的可讀性很差。
需要注意的是，當 a bit 或 bits 修飾名詞時，只有一種格式，那就是 a bit of 或 bits of，後面接不可數名詞或單數可數名詞，這也是 bit 和 little 的最主要區別之一，此時的 a bit 或 bits 屬於名詞範疇，例如：
Do they need a bit of help with their luggage？
他們需要幫忙拿行李嗎？
There were bits of glass everywhere。
到處都是玻璃碎片。
Seven people in the car was a bit of a squeeze。
那輛車坐了七個人是有點擠。
總結一下，a bit （too） much 相當於一個形容詞，但不修飾名詞，通常只作表語，相當於 not fair 或 not reasonable，簡單譯為“過分，不合理，不應當”等，而且只有這個意思，在使用時當作一個整體就可以了。
